Hoarseness is a change in the way your voice sounds. If you’re experiencing hoarseness, your voice may sound raspy or louder than it typically sounds. Fortunately, hoarseness is a symptom of a number of conditions such as a common cold, smoking, and allergies, and usually resolves on its own fairly quickly. If you’re bothered by hoarseness, here are some remedies that may help.

1. Rest Your Voice

Give your voice a much needed break. If you engage in a lot of speaking, singing, or shouting in your everyday life, take a few days off. Resting can give your vocal folds the chance to relax and recuperate.

2. Invest in a Humidifier

A humidifier is an affordable device that adds moisture to the air to prevent dryness that may irritate your vocal folds and lead to hoarseness. If you invest in a humidifier and use it regularly, you may notice a positive difference in your change.

3. Drink Plenty of Water

Dehydration can lead to changes in your voice. So make it a priority to drink at least eight ounces of water per day. Try to avoid alcohol or caffeine as these types of beverages can exacerbate dehydration and hoarseness.

4. Refrain From Using Decongestants

If you have a stuffy nose, you may take decongestants to find relief. Since these types of medications can lead to throat dryness, try to avoid them as much as possible. Other treatments for congestion include a saline spray and a warm compress.

5. Stop Smoking and Drinking Alcohol

Although it’s easier said than done, quitting smoke is essential as it can dry out your throat and lead to irritation in your vocal cords. If you don’t smoke, stay away from those who do. Keeping alcohol intake to a minimum is wise as well.

6. Don’t Whisper

Some people believe that whispering, instead of speaking loudly is a good way to resolve hoarseness. The truth, however, is that whispering can do the opposite and actually worsen it. This is because it puts excessive strain on your voice, much more strain than speaking normally.

If your hoarseness persists for more than a few weeks, consult a doctor. They can determine its cause and design a viable treatment plan. Fortunately, hoarseness is rarely a cause for serious concern and can be treated quickly.
